There's a version of this country that got promised to people in glossy brochures. Work hard. Wait your turn. The house will be there at the end of it. Echoes of Promises is what's left when you finally stop waiting and take a look at the empty rooms.
🎵 NEW: "Echoes of Promises" — Watch the Music Video
This one isn't aimed at a single target. It's aimed at the machinery that turned a promise into a transaction: the pension that became a account you manage yourself and hope you managed right, the starter home that became someone else's investment property, the "wait your turn" that never had an end date attached to it. Two clean cars and a fence as white as what got left out of the picture. Half of what's true about that picture is what's missing from the frame.
Give it a listen when the day's been long enough that you need one.

Why This Song?
The deal was never written down anywhere binding. It was just understood: keep your hands on the wheel, make the payments, and somewhere down the line the road belongs to you. Nobody held a press conference to announce that it didn't work out that way. It just eroded, one refinanced mortgage and one frozen pension at a time, until the picture on the wall stopped matching the house around it.
What's left is the shape of the promise without the substance of it. Porch lights still burning for somebody coming home. A key that doesn't fit the door it was cut for. That's not a metaphor we reached for, it's just what happens to a neighborhood, and a country, when the people making the plans stopped having to live with the results of them.
