Hungarian spies acting against Ukrainian interests is infuriating-and honestly, it should be a wake-up call for anyone who cares about European security and democracy. The fact that Ukraine has arrested ex-military personnel for allegedly spying for Hungarian intelligence is bad enough. But what’s really outrageous is that this isn’t coming from some hostile outside power-it’s coming from Hungary, a NATO and EU member.
Let’s be real: Viktor Orbán has been playing a dangerous game for years. He’s not just disagreeing with the rest of Europe on policy. He’s actively undermining the foundations of both NATO and the EU-blocking aid to Ukraine, threatening to veto their EU membership, and now, apparently, running intelligence operations inside a country that’s fighting for its survival.
This isn’t just about Hungary’s foreign policy. It’s about Orbán’s whole illiberal project. He talks about “illiberal democracy,” but what he’s really doing is eroding democratic norms, silencing the press, and weakening the rule of law. And the problem is, the EU and NATO don’t have real tools to punish members who go down this path. That means leaders like Orbán can keep pushing the limits, knowing there probably won’t be real consequences.
The security risks here are huge. When a NATO country acts like this, it weakens the alliance from the inside and gives Russia exactly what it wants: division, distrust, and a less effective response to threats. If we don’t start holding these illiberal leaders accountable, we’re going to see more of this-and it’s going to put all of us at risk.
Orbán isn’t just a problem for Hungary. He’s a problem for all of us who believe in democracy, security, and solidarity in Europe. It’s past time for NATO and the EU to take this threat seriously and find ways to push back before the damage gets even worse.
